Brownfield Regeneration as a Community Opportunity: People, Space, and Long-Term Value

  09:23, 19 Jun 26

The restoration of abandoned industrial sites (so-called "brownfields") is much more than an economic and urban planning process – it carries a strong social dimension with a direct impact on the quality of life.

Within the framework of the ReInd-BBG project ("Reindustrialization of Brownfields – Better than Greenfields Principle"), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vratsa highlights the key importance of community involvement in these processes. Successful revitalization requires the active participation of all stakeholders – local residents, NGOs, municipalities, and businesses, through the application of the innovative Quadruple Helix model (4H approach).

Why does the community come first? The transformation of neglected spaces into new economic zones not only protects greenfields from overdevelopment but also creates long-term value. When the local community participates in the planning, the final solutions are sustainable, publicly accepted, and tailored to its real needs – from new jobs to a cleaner environment.

Through ReInd-BBG, CCI Vratsa continues to work towards promoting sustainable and inclusive regional development in the Danube Region, proving that the future of regions depends on the balance between economic progress and social engagement.
